Thanks to some assistance on the DAZ3D Developer Discussion forum I think I have DS4-native (i.e. DUF file based) Smart+ Props more-or-less working...

(Unfortunately there's no way to save a prop from DS3, so DS3 users are a bit stuck)

Just in case anybody hadn�t realised... in DS4 you can save a proxied prop using 'Save As > Scene Subset' (select the prop and the proxy it's parented to).
So you only ever need to position an ordinary prop in the DummyHand once, then save it.
In future, just load the prop+proxy Scene Subset, select the prop (not the proxy) and your figure, and run PropGoto+...
