Here a section of wooden planks has been drenched with coal dust and oily fumes from the passing steam trains, old and damaged this wooden section is great for adding atmosphere to any dirty, old and damaged area – good for old wooden crates, an old coal shute on a Victorian house – even for storm bunkers in the American mid-west – even spaceports would still use wood in places – away from ship exhausts.

Somehow, I managed to miss this, Fran. It is also great for coal bin pictures. Of course, unless you were a kid growing up in the 40s or earlier, you'd know what that was. Most houses had them to feed their furnaces. They went out of use in America during the early 50s but probably somewhat later in Europe and other places.
