One day, in this once prosperous town of Ah’Lan, a traveling merchant visited bearing incredible items and riches. One of which was a small caged creature which a man bought for his son as a present. The son tormented the creature until its eventual death. With its last breath, it gave out an ear-piercing shriek that could be heard miles away. Suddenly the ground shook as large areas of dirt and ice broke way to reveal massive tunnels down below. A sea of tiny ravenous Eskimos poured out and killed everyone in the city. Eventually even the castle fell to the carnivorous ankle-biters, leaving the royal treasury open for any hero brave enough. After time, the Eskimos built up the earth around their underground entrances to create hideous, foreboding forms. They serve as reminders to all travelers or would-be heroes – Ah’Lan is no longer a human city.
I wanted to create an uninviting environment that would fit perfectly into a world filled with heroes and villains. The concept was inspired by the killer forest pigmies in the Diablo games. I tried to stay true to the game-play mechanics of the game. The depicted outdoor enemy is meant to be the first challenge of a quest where the player continues on to see what traps and dangers lie inside the castle and in the underground caverns.
I used Vue, ZBrush, and Photoshop.
