This means, best results will be reached by adjusting varying values for transparency, specularity and the like for each single layer if you use them duplicated "into depth" onion-layerwise. Please note that the result and behaviour will depend on your own scene with it`s individual lighting, sky, fog and so on - you will have to fiddle around with them, anyway...
