Avnet Embedded and Calxeda Showcase ARM-Based Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Jan 23, 2013 -- Avnet Embedded, a division of Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas, a business region of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), and Calxeda today announced a joint exhibit of ARM-based server solutions at the Open Compute Project Summit, highlighting options that leverage Avnet’s data center solutions and Calxeda’s ARM-based EnergyCore server-on-a-chip (SoC) technology, utilizing the complementary expertise of both companies to facilitate the rapid deployment of ARM servers tailored to end users’ specific applications.

“Avnet is committed to offering our global customers more than just a catalogue of available components,” said Chuck Kostalnick, senior vice president, Avnet Embedded. “We can provide our customers with a selection of building blocks that can be assembled into the right solution for their targeted workloads. We are able to streamline our ARM server design process to directly address our customers’ challenges and deliver those designs to the Open Compute community, with the first of those contributions targeted for the fall of 2013.”

Calxeda is leading the industry transition to low-power servers with its EnergyCore SoC (Server on a Chip) technology, which can halve server space requirements and offer a ten-fold savings in power. Calxeda is currently shipping the ECX-1000 based on the available 32-bit ARM A9 core, and recently announced a roadmap of products that will use ARM’s Cortex-A15 and 64-bit Cortex-A57 cores.

“Calxeda’s technology enables unprecedented power and space savings, and end users are embracing the opportunity to resolve their power usage, space and cost challenges,” said Karl Freund, vice president of marketing for Calxeda. “Developing a solid ecosystem—both hardware and software—that will address end users’ needs is essential to the widespread adoption of any technology.“
