Message From His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of Commonwealth Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- Mar 09, 2015 -- The Commonwealth is an integral part of our collective identity, and its history is deeply intertwined with that of Canada. Since her accession to the Throne, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has played a singular role at the very heart of this organization of 53 member States. She is the main thread, the symbol of unity and strength driving the Commonwealth forward.

As The Queen's representative in Canada, I am delighted to mark Commonwealth Day, which we have been celebrating for nearly 40 years. It is a day that reminds us that, like our fellow Canadians, the people of the Commonwealth recognize all that we have in common while embracing the rich diversity of languages and cultures.

As we draw closer to the festivities surrounding the 150th anniversary of Confederation, I invite all Canadians to make the most of this special day to reflect on how Commonwealth countries are working to make this a smarter, more caring world.

David Johnston
