How to create a texture new Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

I have just uploaded a tutorial on how to create a texture, using a brick wall as the example.

http://www.sharecg.com/v/6488/tutorial/Creating-a-Brick-Texture

I have also uploaded the resultant texture, here:

<>seems your links are not working my friend.

<>just for the hell of it, here is my tutorial on similar subject. how to make textures for games.

<>and here is a 73 texture strong pack of textures, featuring specular, diffuse, normal, opacity, and self-illumination maps.

How do you turn an address into a link then? I haven't figured out this forum's controls yet... if there are any for links.

It's simple enough to get to the addresses I've posted, just copy the address and paste that same address into the address bar and click "Go".  Unfortunately I can no longer edit the original thread starter message in this thread, so all I can do is say again, that the address for the simple method of creating a decent texture is:

http://www.sharecg.com/v/6488/tutorial/Creating-a-Brick-Texture

And I seem to have discovered how to turn it into a link, Yippeee!

So now the link for the finished texture is:

http://www.sharecg.com/v/6489/texture/DarkBrick

I have also now uploaded the raw image for use with the tutorial:

http://www.sharecg.com/v/6551/texture/RawDarkBrick

Hope this helps.

Well the only problem is, that you can clearly see the brush and clone stamp when you tile the texture. But.....

How about (in case of a brickwall) cut out a variety of single stones..a larger amount, so that they do not repeat too early. Then make a layout mask in black and white of where exactly to place the bricks and finally create mortar layer (via blur) under the bricks. merge down all bricks on one layer. I assume that you watch which bricks are at the edges and you use the same at the other end. then offset this bricklayer and just add final touches carefully with the clonestamp. idealwise you don't use it at all. This way you get rid of the visible blury grid on the wall.

Cheers

If you copy entire bricks you'll probably get even more of a pattern, I find it's better to use small (very small indeed) sections of a texture, tiny bits of a brick, rather than entire bricks - but if you want a totally smooth look you could just use one single brick to create a wall made of just that one brick - which rather defeats the purpose of using real photographic textures.

For a really smooth featureless texture, the best thing to do is to start with a really large photograph of a very big wall, and to chose one without much patterning visible in the original, that way you get a much smoother, less patterned look to the finished texture once it's tiled.

But if you want to do an old looking building then you need old looking bricks, and they are not smooth and featureless.

actually brick walls are one of the easier things to make a seamless map of.  Its best if you start with a large image (many bricks) with little to no shadowing.

First step is the vertical tile ..generally easy if your bricks are uniform shapes. Just keep an eye if the bricks are coursed (rows are staggered).

Then make a new layer copy of the texture and turn off its visibility. You'll want it in a minute.  Offset the original so the horizontal center is in the middle of the page. Now turn on your copy and erase everything but a culmn or two of bricks and a little mortar on each side. I use a slightly soft brush to avoid making hard edges.

then align your seam covering bit and smooth out the edges.

This same technique works on most brick, stone and tile textures. it gets trickier on fieldstones which are different shapes, or on moss covered walls.
