Star Ratings Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

There seems to be a problem with the star ratings. (at least in the Halloween Challenge) To many people have a just a one star rating for work that should be much higher, and I have a comment about not being able to post a star rating to one of my submissions.

Can you guys at sharecg check this out.

Ha ha.......that is what I found too!!!!! I viewed a lovely work today and left a comment on the member's page. Then I tried to up their rating from one star....but I could not do it after giving a comment. Thanks for confirming that I am not going crazy!!!!

I noticed yesterday (early hours for you in the USA!) that someone was on-line giving all the art one star!

You can not rate your own submissions. As for the thing about someone rating everything with 1 star. That's why I don't really care for a rating system to begin with. It's always open to abuse. I also have to ask just how you know what someone else is rating your submissions. If someone rates you work lower than it's current rating that will affect it's overall rating but that doesn't neccesarily mean they only rated it one star either. Rating something that's currently 5 stars with a 3 star rating will lower your rating and those 3 stars may very well be just what the rater feels an image deserves. That doesn't make them abusers.

People will rate things what they think they're worth or they'll abuse the system. Either way it can lower your overall rating. One Star being abusive from one person and One Star being an honest opinion of your work from somebody else, You really can't tell the difference between the two either. Without knowing a person's heart, you really can't judge their motives for the ratings they hand out.

I personally don't pay any attention to the stars given my content. Views and downloads are what really counts. Comments count next. Stars are the least thing to worry about in my opinion because they're biased and totally arbitrary. Frown

I think this is a big problem here at ShareCG.

The rating system is not useful at all, because the rater remain anonymous, and some

people lose their time giving low rates to the other users work, without any motivation.

The solution (imho) is to generate an automatic comment with the user name and rate,

or to merge the rating system with the comments, if technically possible.

Right now I think there are more important issues that the site needs to resolve like the one where people are having difficulties downloading our content. This is WAY more important to me than the stupid ratings system which I ignore anyway.

Hmmmmmmmmmm....you are right as always!!!!!! I was not trying to rate my OWN work but that of another member!!!! A nice piece of work with one star. I agree that there are far more important issues but clearly it is an issue that can affect some people.

I tend to agree with the idea that rating should be linked to comment...then it would be meaningful to all concerned.

No I didn't think you were, but from the way the original poster worded his post it sounds like he was trying to rate his own work. I'm certainly not always right. In fact, I could be wrong, but that's how his post read to me.

Lol...I have just realised that it was me who wanted to rate the work of the original poster. I left a mesage indicating that it would not allow me.......I had just posted a message and then the star rating was disabled!!!!!...the same thing happened when I tried to rate one of your works!!!!!.....I was partucularly impressed with one of your models and wanted to star rate....but it would not let me!!!!

This is certainly interesting, and I'll look into it. I think I know what the problem is, and hopefully it'll be a quick fix.

If I had a choice I'd turn ratings off on my models. That's how I feel about stars.  Tongue out

joypauline

That's why I started this post, from your comment left on my work.

MatrixWorkz

No I was not trying to rate my own work! If it sounded like that in my original post, sorry.

Glad you did!!!!....a very good piece of work with such a low star rating just got me so mad and defeats the whole point. Every piece of art uploaded just before yours was rated the same....something odd there!!!! I am off to try to upgrade you!!!...and it should be obvious to everyone why I would do that. I just could not get the star rating to work.......I clicked several times and nothing happened!....and I was logged in.

It was this phrasing that threw me "and I have a comment about not being able to post a star rating to one of my submissions."

Now I understand you meant you had a comment on your image from Pauline stating she couldn't rate your image. I didn't know that when I read it the first time and it sounded like you were making a comment about not being able to rate your own  submission. LOL! Ain't language and context grand? Tongue out

as i said in previous posts, the star rating needs re-evaluating sometime in the future. at the very least there should be no anonimous ratings. personally, i wouldn't dream of giving any less than four stars to anything i wasn't sure i could do better, and if i ever do happen to give a low rating i will comment and say what needs work on. haven't had to yet. there is so much work unrated, and there is no consistancy in the ratings that things have. need proof? go to the last page when viewing by rating, and work backwards. there is still some good stuff there.

Yes irishlostboy!.....as you say, surely an important point with rating is to comment at the same time!.....helps all. I see it as akin to handing in an assignment. Any teacher/educational moderator would be slated for marking without comment. It becomes a pointless exercise.

Maybe many would disagree with me.

Personally I have seen too many sites where a rating system becomes nothing more than a popularity contest and the ratings mean nothing more than you have a lot of friends. It says nothing about the standard of the work rated.

This is soooooooooo true Beatrice!!!!!!!....Ooooooooooh for lots of friends willing to do just that for you!!!....I, perhaps naively, would have thought that most people would prefer an honest appraisal....far more personally satisifying!

Never mind the star ratings - currently they do not mean anything. As has been mentioned before, that system is still open to abuse, and it appears that people take the opportunity to abuse it a lot.

It's true that, unfortunately, there is a lot of excellent work that has received a one-star rating, while a lot of the less excellent work seems to enjoy surprisingly good ratings.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no need to worry about views - I never pay attention to the star ratings because I know they do not represent the real quality of the work that is posted here.

Oooooooooooh how sensible brainstew!!!!!...that is why I wonder why the site even bothers to have them!!!....of course there are genuine ratings BUT...I was watching one late night here in the UK and actually saw ratings being given given one star or downgraded.....there will always be idiots who think this is fun!!!! Someone (called ,of course, anonymous) was clearly goung around and giving one star to many products. All you Americans are out of time sink with us here in Europe....but it does have tha advantage of seeing unscrupulous behaviour!!!!!

I don't know what you were watching, but "Anonymous" unlogged in guests can NOT use the Star rating system here. It says you must be logged in to rate things.
