UV Mapping Mess new Report this article as Inappropriate to us !!!Login to Reply

Howdy, not sure if this belongs here, so I won't be upset if it gets moved.

I do a fair amount of modeling in Poser.  Okay, actually, other than Mike2 and V2, I model EVERYTHING I use, that isn't standard with Poser, and sometimes I use Poser stuff as a jumping off place for new models.  No problems with usage or credit that way.

Usually I can texture my stuff fairly easily.  Sometimes I use UVMapper to make the templates, and sometimes I free-hand it all.  Obviously, the preferred method would be to map the texture mesh so that there's a template availble to others, when I share things.

Lately I've been experimenting with various figure changes. I took the lion's head and part of Mike2's head, created a head that looks similar to a Vah Shir from EverQuest, and put it on Mikey by using "replace body part with prop".  It works great... except... For the texturing.

The original lion template doesn't work AT ALL, ends up with face on the back of the head as well as (crooked) on the front of the head, and whatnot.

I ran UVMapper first for the entire figure, then for the prop that ended up as the head.  I can't get a usable mesh template going on here, I keep ending up with, see above, the stuff in the strangest places.

Now, I will admit -- It's ENTIRELY possible that I don't know my mouse from a hole in the ground when it comes to using UVM, and that may be the whole problem right there.  If it is, does anyone know of any tutorials for the program?  If I ever had any, I've done gone and losted 'em.

If that's NOT the problem -- are there other mesh-mappers out there anywhere, and if so, heck, are there any here on SCG?

Thanks folks!

You need separate maps for the prop and the figure so that they don't share the same map. I thougth that Mike had separate maps for head and body. Haven't checked lately. Do you know how to change the maps from Poser? If so check if you can change the map of the head to the map that contains the lion's head. That should do it. I think.

Maybe I'll try this on my system to see if there is easier way.

uvmapper.com has tutorial page. Only one is for the free uvmapper. All tuts are in pdf format.

There are other uvmappers you can google but I think you'll find the uvmapper is still one of the best ones out there.

Hope this helps.

Here's a fast low-qual JPG for an idea of what I'm doing, if that helps any.

Yes, I do have an ordinary Mikey map for the body, and that is just fine for texturing.

The problem comes in with the head, which is a prop composed of the back of Mikey's head plus the front of the Poser lion's head.

I've always liked UVM myself, tho I did once try a different one -- I can't even remember what it was, which just goes to show, doesn't it?

Thank you for the tutorial link.  I didn't have that link before, and it should help me tonnes.
