Look closely at the "ME-109s" in the movie "12 O'clock High" and you'll see that they are really P-51Bs. WW2 airmen often said that the early Mustangs looked too much like the Messerschmitts and it was common practice to send out Lightnings to escort bombers on their way home because there was no other plane like them!

Cool! Thank you so very much. As well as it's escort role it was also placed in an interceptor role as needed to fly with Spitfires and Hurricanes. A joint US/UK design that used the Rolls Royce Merlin piston engine as the power plant.
